Science+Fiction, Trieste’s International Science Fiction festival, is a multimedia event with a focus on exploring the many worlds of fantasy and science fiction, the experimental languages and new technologies of film, television, visual arts and entertainment.
Science+Fiction received the legacy of the International Science Fiction Film Festival, starting in the early ‘60s. Every year in November, this international event brings the winds of science fiction to the city of Trieste: cult movies and long-awaited premieres, big film stars and young talented artists, retrospectives, classic movies and rarities.
The festival is widely recognized as a fine scene for launching the career of promising directors and a showcase for new trends in sci-fi, fantasy and horror film. Celebrity guests of Science + Fiction in the latest years include Dario Argento, Pupi Avati, Lamberto Bava, The Blues Brothers director John Landis, Christiane Kubrick, Terry Gilliam, the masters of comic strips Moebius and Enki Bilal, Joe Dante – director of Gremlins, and E.T.’s creator, Carlo Rambaldi.
Two are the major awards for every edition: the “Urania d’Argento” (silver Urania), a career achievement award co-sponsored by Mondadori editions, and The “Asteroide” award, created every year by a different artist for the winner of the competition section.
The latest editions have progressively grown to include new theme sections and more special events, exhibitions on science fiction, public meetings and round tables, concerts and stage performances. Not just films, therefore, but a wide range of events attracting both young and not-so-young lovers of the genre, for a ground total of 10.000 spectators per year.
