On January 13 and 14, 2011, a referendum called by FIAT’s managing director, Sergio Marchionne, asked the workers to choose whether they should accept the new labor conditions and continue to work, or not accept them and, thus, close down the company’s headquarters in Turin. It is a momentous turning point: bypassing the negotiating table with the unions, the workers and employees are being asked to decide firsthand whether or not they should lose their job, in the second case sacrificing the rights they had won through years of union battles – rights they thought they had acquired for good.
