BUFF’s aim is to bring world class cinema to a young audience.
Are accepted features, documentaries, animations and short films from all over the world.
The main target groups for BUFF are children and young people (age 3-19).
Some films will be selected for one of our competitions, but most of the films will be screened outside competition. For films in competition, are mainly considered films that will have the Swedish, European or World Premiere at BUFF.
Main competitions are:
* Best film for children / 8 films competing for The City of Malmö’s Children’s Film Award 100.000 SEK.
* Best film for young people / 8 films competing for The Church of Sweden Award 100.000 SEK
* Best short film for children and young people (maximum duration of 15 minutes) / 8 films competing for the Region Skåne Short Film Award 100.000 SEK
* The Young People’s Film Award, organized by the department for Culture for Children and Youth in the City of Malmö 25.000 SEK
* ECFA Award for Best European film for children and young people
* In collaboration with Sveriges unga akademi and LadyBug Festival we are arranging a film competition for young filmmakers in Sweden called “A Better Tomorrow” (En bättre morgondag).
BUFF is an exceptional film festival, because it is for everyone. Some are watching their very first movie in a cinema at BUFF. Some are screening their first feature film for the toughest and most honest critics, namely children. Some are inspired to tell stories with moving images themselves. Since 1984, BUFF Filmfestival has been the most important screenings venues for films for children and young people in the Nordic countries.
In more recent years, BUFF is also attracting a growing number of professionals who work in the industry. To encourage the production of films for a young audience is very important as it is culture aimed at children. Films for children and youths are often produced on a limited budget and generally do not get much attention in the media. As such, BUFF wants to be a forum that highlights questions and facilitates discussion around access to film and the need to find a sustainable way of producing great film for children and young people.
