In short, this is the family portrait of an urban tribe of our times.
The film begins with a accident that happens to Franca during her ritual Sunday lunch.
The old lady slips in the kitchen and breaks her hip. She is taken to hospital where she will have to spend a few months, looked after by her daughters. The story recounts what happens to her and her family during this long convalescence. All the tangled knots in the emotional and sentimental relationships of her nearest and dearest are brought out into the open.
Underlying tensions explode. Marital relationships, existential, generational and
professional problems. And Franca, the only one truly ill, realizes that her
"happy family" is in a state of crisis. Franca's recovery will reflect the recovery of her daughters and her sons-in-law through a collective awareness of how beautiful life is despite everything. Especially when the problems are tackled head on and not ignored or suppressed.
