In the 1960’s, horror screenplays were extremely successful worldwide. For the first time, a number of small films that enjoyed great success worldwide were also produced in Italy and together they formed a sort of Italian approach to the genre. With contributions from several maestros (Dario Argento, Pupi Avati) and important French critics, the characteristics and strong points of an original idea of horror are reconstructed, in which pop aesthetics and transgressive contents play an important role, making this a unique Italian production in that period.

Popular Italian cinema is a universe full of fantasy and one that is rarely explored. Describing Italian horror films of the Sixties means analysing a productive path in which the restrictions of financial means was not seen as a limitation, but as a possibility to experiment with great innovation, both aesthetically and regarding contents.
