In June 2020, once lockdown was just concluded, after the whole of Italy, as well as the whole of Europe was waiting to be able to return to a normal way of living, the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma decided to give a concrete signal of restart: the theatre wanted to produce the first and only new opera event scheduled in Europe for the summer of 2020.
The choice falls on the opera that most of all represents Italy in the world: Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi. The artistic direction is entrusted to Damiano Michieletto, a young and visionary artist.
The challenge is huge: there’s only one month to prepare the production and there are many limits imposed by the anti-Covid protocols. First of all, the guarantee of distancing between singers and dancers on stage.

As Michieletto says: "Every limit can become a cue for artistic creativity".
Rigoletto 2020 is the story of this adventure.
