In a Carabinieri station in a small town on the Calabrian coast, a marshal interrogates a young and frightened postman, arrested during the night for threatening a patrol carabiniere with a knife. The marshal immediately notices that the postman is slightly delayed, but as the interrogation continues, he manages to get him to talk. The young man, however, recounts something that apparently has nothing to do with the incident he is accused of: the friendship between him and five of his peers who used to meet every summer at that holiday resort, twenty years earlier. Those same friends are now in their early thirties, and all have emotional difficulties and borderline personality disorders. They live scattered in various parts of Italy and are all traumatised by a serious blood event they witnessed as children. The day before the postman's arrest, the friends leave their 'interrupted' lives at the same time to join one of them, Gianluca, who has decided to return to the small Calabrian village to take revenge. Everyone else's objective is to prevent Gianluca from doing anything foolish, but that village, a place of holidays and memories, traumatically abandoned twenty years earlier, is too powerful a magnet for them. Once there, they will realise that the real reason for all of them to meet again after so many years will be to look into the face of the horror they experienced and finally come to terms with the trauma that never allowed them to live a normal life but turned it into hell. Like an emotional and temporal jigsaw puzzle, We Were Children is a story of friendship; but it is also a story of broken lives, blood and a fierce and painful twenty-year countdown to a revenge that seems inevitable.
