The many of us who loved Danis Tanovic's last feature, the multiple award winning No Man's Land, will have our expectations pleasingly confounded by the skilful change of register which marks his new film. If you think lush visuals, a big name cast of leading ladies and a long hidden family secret suggest more than a hint of melodrama, you'd be right - but this is no potboiler. In Paris in the 80s, a man newly released from prison is rejected by his wife. After a violent confrontation he throws himself from the apartment window, witnessed by his three young daughters. In Paris in the present day, the sisters live their own lives, the family bonds are broken. Sophie, the eldest, is married with young children, but suspects her photographer husband of having an affair. The youngest sister, Anne, is a student involved in a messy relationship with one of her tutors. And middle sister Celine lives a solitary and joyless life, caring for her difficult mother. When a young man starts to take an interest in her, she little suspects the true motive behind his approaches. Originally conceived by Krzysztof Kieslowski and screenwriter Krzysztof Piesiewicz as part of a trilogy (alongside Heaven and Purgatory).
