The movement of cinematographers and writers that exploded in Venice in 1968, aiming was to “attack” the Festival’s constitution, was settled by challenging the director Luigi Chiarini with two days of protest and drama – Chiarini resigned, Pasolini was pressed to withdraw Teoremaand Liliana Cavani lamented the lack of support from the protesters for the resistance in Prague. Luciana Castellina also remembers the conflict and split within the PCI Federation in Venice. The protests that year not only resulted in the opening night being delayed for 48 hours, but also transformed the Festival into a “minor” event for eleven years, as described by Louis Malle in Venezia ’68.It is difficult to say whether the ‘68 Venetian movement was a success or not and many of the interviewees can’t remember the reasons why they “marched on the Lido”, even though some of them still take a very strong stance against the Venetian establishment.
