Italy, the Dozza Penitentiary in Bologna. Hope and resignation colour life as it goes on in the criminal section of the prison. Life depends on time that never ends and an “application” to fill out. In the language of prisons, the application refers to the form that the detainee must submit for the authorization to see his lawyer, to make a phone call, to ask for a job, to meet a family member, to see his educator or one of the many volunteers that help out in the prisons every day. A Thousand and One Nights follows one of these “applications” through its process to focus on the personal stories of the prisoners and the bureaucratic mazes that control life in prison.
